Florida State University dedicated a memorial to FSU alumnus and U.S. Navy Hero Lieutenant Commander Michael Scott Speicher, whose fighter jet was shot down over Iraq on the first night of the Persian Gulf War in 1991. The memorial is located at the entrance of the tennis facility named in his honor. It features a bronze pilot's helmet, a flight jacket, and a hat similar to those worn by Speicher.
