Community Waste Station

Florida State University takes active steps to prevent the spread of diseases, such as COVID-19, by minimizing individual interactions while enhancing its existing cleaning and disinfection practices. To meet campus needs for increased sanitation of common spaces, FSU Facilities installed community waste stations across campus, alleviating the need for custodial staff to routinely enter personal office spaces to clean or collect trash from desk-side bins.

Individuals are responsible for disposing of their trash at these stations. Each community waste station consists of labeled bins to help separate trash into their respective waste streams. To learn more about Community Waste Stations, please see our FAQ  .

Community waste stations will allow for:

  • Reduced contact between individuals – custodial workers will not enter your office.
  • Increased time for staff to disinfect shared spaces.
  • Increased recycling rates – a single decision point makes it much easier for individuals to make the best choice for waste disposal.
  • The decreased number of plastic bags needed for the thousands of bins across campus results in less plastic waste and significant cost savings.

The initial pilot test for this system was conducted successfully in the Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science (EOAS) building and the Facilities suite of buildings. Many similar institutions across the country have effectively implemented comparable systems. This change is significant for campus operations, and we appreciate your continued support.
