09/03/2024
The Facilities Construction and Labor Shop supports the University with general maintenance and provides services that enable campus units to perform to the best of their ability. As the In-House Labor and Construction Maintenance Supervisor, Shane Clemons is always on job sites working alongside his team to complete these projects promptly.
Clemons has worked at FSU for 16 years. He originally began in the Labor Shop as a Concrete Finisher. Clemons was then offered a position working with machines and heavy equipment, where he received his Commercial Driver's License, and became a Commercial Equipment Operator for over 10 years. He moved into his current role as an In-House Labor and Construction Maintenance Supervisor three years ago.
Before coming to FSU, Clemons held a variety of different jobs including serving in the lead ground role for a tree company, working at Firehouse Subs on Tennessee Street as a manager, working at the USA Gas Station by the Tallahassee Mall as a Manager, and working at Dillard’s at the Tallahassee Mall selling shoes. Clemons earned his high school diploma from Leon High School and has completed two semesters of college credits as he works to earn his associate in arts in criminology.
When asked what his daily routine in his role entails, Clemons shared “You can’t really make plans for the day because they change within a phone call.”
His team works campus-wide and handles multiple projects both on and off the main campus. Their focus is on projects related to concrete, asphalt, and fences, as well as working with the Pipe Shop to dig up water, sewer, condensate, and steam lines. Clemons shares that they handle almost anything related to construction. His favorite part about working in Facilities is the people and his role.
Outside of the office, Clemons plays adult league baseball and even travels to Fort Myers every year to play in the Roy Hobbs World Series tournament. He also has two wonderful kids; his oldest son, Dakota, who is 14 years old, and his daughter, Emilie, who is 12 years old.
“In the brief time I have been around Shane he has always had a solution to a problem. I don’t think he knows how to say it can’t be done. A pleasure to work with.” said Joel Van Ravenswaay, Director of Maintenance Operations.
