Malica Segura

Facilities Financial Services provides financial services and reporting on University plant and facility operations. As Assistant Director of Budget and Financial Services, Malica Segura plays an essential role in managing the procurement and accounts payable functions for Facilities and advising the various Facilities stakeholders on the procurement and accounts payable processes.

Segura began working at FSU in December 2005 and has worked in various areas across campus since. She began by holding positions in central HR in Recruitment, and Attendance and Leave, then moved to working at the College of Medicine in their HR and Contracts and Grants departments. From there, Segura progressed to the MagLab, where she managed the budget of their large National Science Foundation grant. Segura then shifted to the College of Nursing where she served as the Assistant Director of Administrative Services for 11 years before coming to Facilities in August of 2022.

Before coming to FSU, Segura worked in claims for Travelers Insurance, a national insurance company. Prior to that, she was an Assistant Manager at Sears in Sanford, FL right out of college, but quickly learned that retail was not for her. This May, Segura received her master's degree in public administration from FSU. She also holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from FSU and a bachelor's degree in business administration from FAMU. Segura was born and raised in New Jersey and attended Howard University for her first year of college before transferring to FAMU.

When asked what a typical day in her role looks like she joked “I was just telling someone that I used to plan my workday and now I just come in and let the day tell me what to do!”

On an average day, she approves purchases in SpearMart, answers questions on the best way to buy or pay for something, determines appropriate funding, runs reports, attends a meeting, talks to external vendors, and supports her team which handles large volumes of work. While her team may be small, it is mighty, as they are at the center of the operations. The majority of the buying and paying flow through them.

“Malica is such a dedicated and hardworking member of our team showing continuous initiative, creativity, and leadership,” said David Beck, the Director of University Business Administrators. “She approaches each day with a customer service and solution-based focus. This translates into collaborative and positive experiences with those she interacts with. I am grateful for all Malica and her team do and look forward to a wonderful year ahead!”

Segura’s favorite part of working at Facilities is the people, as she feels that this is truly a family environment.

“During my tenure at FSU, I have seen the faces and now I know the stories behind those faces. To see so many people and moving parts work in concert with each other is something to see,” said Segura. “I do not think that the campus fully understands the huge role that Facilities personnel play on campus. We are woven into the fabric of every part of campus.”

Outside of work, Segura enjoys a good nap! When not napping, she enjoys reading, trying new things as she is always down for an adventure, concerts, eating, and just having fun doing whatever she is doing. Segura has two boys, 25 and 20. The oldest is in the United States Coast Guard and is currently stationed in Washington, DC, where he does IT work. The youngest will be starting his junior year at FAMU where he is an architecture major.
