Building Excellence: Lashea Alexander
07/08/2024
Building Services strives to provide the most efficient, versatile, timely, and economic Custodial Service program possible. As the current Assistant Director of Building Services, Lashea Alexander is essential in providing guidance for the main campus custodial staff and custodial contractors for the off-site buildings.
Alexander moved into her current position in 2015 but has worked at FSU for 19 years. She began working at FSU in 2004 as a Building Services Custodial Supervisor after working as a branch manager at Advance America for several years. Since then, she has become a Maintenance Support Specialist, received a promotional opportunity to become Superintendent, and continued to progress to her current role.
Throughout her career, Alexander has completed a wide variety of trainings and certifications to ensure that she has all the skills needed to expertly and efficiently lead, including being an APPA Institute of Facilities Management Graduate in 2019, IICRC certified (Carpet and Water Restoration), completing the Supervisory Tool Kit Training, completing Women’s Leadership training, and has attended all necessary Facilities Management courses for job functions.
Alexander notes that there is never a dull moment in her role as every day, every hour, there is always some sort of excitement! She says that if you can think of the most bizarre story, she can top it times 10! Along with the excitement of her role, some of Alexander’s current responsibilities include developing the CATT System for floor restoration and maintenance, recruitment and interview processes, addressing employee matters, and providing a healthy and clean environment for students, faculty, staff, and customers using APPA standards.
Her favorite part of working at FSU Facilities is watching the individual team members grow, learning from others, and all the out-of-the-ordinary situations. She also shares that she can make the boring topic of flooring and floor care exciting and fun!
“Shay has been a steadying presence for our Building Services team for quite some time, and that has held true over the past several months through our organizational changes. She is willing to lean into these changes with a great blend of a willing, can-do attitude and rich operational context and knowledge,” said Daniel Sheets, Director of Facilities Operations. “She’s not afraid of the difficult conversation, always approaching it from a problem-solving perspective. We are lucky to have her on our team.”
