Building Excellence: Billy Hicks
08/04/2025
The Building Services Student Affairs team plays a critical role in ensuring that FSU’s central student spaces are clean and well-maintained, creating a welcoming environment that supports student engagement, events, and daily campus life. Billy Hicks serves as the Building Services Superintendent for Student Affairs at FSU, a role he began in February 2024. With 14 years of service at FSU, Hicks has steadily advanced through Building Services’ ranks, as Custodial Supervisor, Senior Custodial Supervisor, and Program Associate in Building Services, before stepping into his current leadership role.
Before joining FSU, Hicks built an impressive 20-year career in the United States Navy, retiring with an Honorable Discharge as a Senior Culinary Specialist. His service spanned a range of locations—from naval ships to international posts across Europe and Australia—and included roles such as Watch Captain in Meridian, Mississippi, and Training Specialist in Tallahassee, Florida. He brings extensive experience in culinary arts, hospitality management, and operational leadership, having managed high-volume food service operations in both shipboard and shore-based environments.
Hicks holds an Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Kaplan University. His educational and military background laid a strong foundation for his current responsibilities, which include overseeing the maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and day-to-day operations of the Student Union and related facilities. On a typical day, he leads employee and supervisor training, inspects buildings for quality and upkeep, and coordinates task scheduling to ensure smooth and efficient service.
What Hicks enjoys most about his work is providing top-notch custodial service to the students, staff, and faculty of FSU. Outside of work, he enjoys fishing, playing basketball, watching sports on TV, and traveling around Florida. He’s been married to his wife Ann for 34 years, and together they have three children—two sons, Billy and Damarcus, and a daughter, Kierra.
