Chemical Safety is crucial for providing safe working and learning environments for campus laboratories. Ben Arline, Assistant Chemical Safety Officer in Environmental Health & Safety, is responsible for operating protocols for lab personnel interacting with potentially dangerous materials. As a hazmat-certified environmental specialist, Ben is the first responder to on-site hazardous incidents, developing training to enhance safety knowledge and mitigate these occurrences. He also serves as the university's liaison for compliance with environmental reporting regulations of federal, state, and local regulators, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Ben recently managed the improvement of the University’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) management plan for hazardous materials, resulting in a more comprehensive document. He has also been integral in updating the University’s Spill Prevision Control Countermeasure (SPCC), describing the University’s policy to prevent, contain, and clean up oil spills. “Ben is committed to providing quality service across the scope of work that the Chemical Safety Section provides Florida State University,” Chemical Safety Officer Dr. Renee Murray said. “He has fostered exceptional operating protocols to improve laboratory safety practices for acutely hazardous work including, but not limited to extremely hazardous gas use, stabilization of water reactive materials, comprehensive waste stream flow chart illustrating incompatibility of common laboratory wastes.”

Ben received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Florida State University and a master's in chemistry from the University of Florida. He is pursuing a master's in civil engineering at Florida State. Ben is considered the jack of all trades with computer, automobile, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work skills. Ben is the father of 3 children, ages 16, 10, and 4 months; his first he raised while he was a student here at FSU. He spends his free time playing guitar and is passionate about fitness. During his lunch break, you can find Ben exercising at FSU’s outdoor fitness and pickleball courts.
