Building Excellence: Alfie Brown

The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) is globally renowned for being the largest and highest-powered magnet lab in the world, conducting groundbreaking research here in Tallahassee. Alfie Brown, who works in Environmental Health & Safety as the Interim Safety Director at the MagLab, plays an important role in ensuring that the facility operates safely.

In his role, Brown ensures compliance with occupational health and safety guidelines while promoting a safe working environment. As a certified Safety Manager, an average day for Brown includes providing training, performing risk assessments, performing incident investigations, writing and reviewing policies and programs, emergency response planning, reviewing procedures, and granting authorizations to perform work. Brown is passionate about establishing a valued safety culture at FSU, one that he helps build and support through his daily role and as a group leader.


Brown has worked at FSU for 21 years. He started as an industrial Electrician at the MagLab, then transferred to the Safety Department in 2013. Prior to FSU, Brown attended Florida A&M University and served in the military for 8 years. Outside of work, Brown is a father and from a large family, as well as an avid LA Laker fan, and a Cincinnati Bengal/Reds fan.
