Building Excellence: Deion Moore
09/22/2025
Behind the scenes, maintenance technicians ensure that campus buildings, equipment, and living spaces are safe, functional, and comfortable for students, faculty, and staff. Deion Moore currently serves as a General Maintenance Technician for Housing Maintenance and is recognized by his supervisors and colleagues as well as students and their families for his dedication and skill. He has been with the university for just over two years and stepped into his current role in April 2023.
Maintenance has always been at the core of Moore’s work experience. He grew up learning trades alongside his grandfather and uncle, gaining hands-on practice in HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work from a young age. Before coming to FSU, Moore worked at Seminole Grand, West 10, and Ave 29, where he was responsible for keeping housing facilities in top condition. His work included updating thermostats, replacing electrical switches and outlets, and ensuring sinks, toilets, and showers were functioning properly. Officially starting his maintenance career in 2018, Moore has built years of experience maintaining apartments, houses, and campus buildings. He also holds a GED and takes pride in having turned the skills he honed in childhood into a full-time career.
In his current role at FSU, Moore’s responsibilities include keeping equipment and machinery running smoothly in residence halls on campus, all while ensuring a safe environment for students and staff. A typical day starts with checking the basement or boiler room to monitor water flow across multiple buildings and to watch for leaks. From there, he reviews his work orders and tackles maintenance tasks throughout the day.
“Mr. Moore is a great team player, and he works with a smile and a sense of urgency to make sure all the students are taken care of in a timely manner. I only see him on the rise. Great job, Deion,” said Paul Stone, Maintenance Supervisor.
For Moore, the best part of his job is the people. He enjoys the conversations he has with students and the chance to hear different perspectives. “Seeing the different adversities of students and understanding that there are many different aspects to this thing we call life… the conversations can be eye-opening sometimes,” he reflects.
Outside of work, Moore enjoys spending time at the range with friends, where he hopes to get formal training in the future. He is also passionate about cars, spending time researching customizations like rims, spoilers, paint jobs, and engines.
At home, Moore has a dog who tends to prefer his brother’s company when he’s around—but quickly becomes Moore’s shadow once his brother leaves. Despite being the one who feeds and walks her, he jokes that she only chooses him as her favorite when it’s convenient.
