Behind the Scenes at Doak: How FSU Facilities Keeps Game Day Running
When more than 79,000 fans pack into Doak Campbell Stadium, all eyes are on the field. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team from Florida State University Facilities works tirelessly to keep everything running safely and smoothly. From long before the gates open to well after the game clock hits zero , this team is the quiet force ensuring that game day unfolds without a hitch.
Before kickoff, the Facilities crew is already hard at work preparing for the stadium and surrounding areas. They coordinate logistics, inspect mechanical systems, and make sure every space is ready to welcome thousands of fans. Their work often begins days in advance, laying the groundwork for a seamless event.

On game day, the Facilities Operations, Maintenance, and Environmental Health & Safety teams spread out throughout Doak to keep the stadium functioning at its best. The biohazard team ensures safety and sanitation across the venue, tackling emergency spill responses and more. The plumbing crew keeps the water flowing, maintaining restrooms and concession areas, while the in-house electricians monitor everything from lighting to elevators. Meanwhile, the AC controls team operates quietly in mechanical rooms to regulate air flow and temperature across Doak, keeping players cool, guests comfortable, and systems operating efficiently.
While excitement fills the stands, FSU’s fire watch team maintains vigilant oversight of safety systems. They monitor for hazards and stand ready to act at a moment’s notice, ensuring that fire protection and life safety measures remain fully operational.

Together, these groups form the backbone of every home game. Their coordination, skill, and quick thinking make it possible for fans to focus on the excitement on the field rather than the complex infrastructure supporting it.
“The hard work of the FSU Facilities staff is the unseen foundation of every successful home football game,” said Chad Cooper, Associate Director of Facilities Maintenance. “They ensure the buildings are functional and operational for tens of thousands of fans, from the pre-game rush to the final post-game conclusion—and we are so very proud of them!”
The roar of the crowd may be what fans remember most, but it’s the quiet commitment of FSU Facilities staff that makes those moments possible. From preparation to cleanup, they keep Doak Campbell Stadium running strong, proving that behind every great game, there’s an even greater team working behind the scenes.
